The Prelude: Why Finland?
Welcome to the main page for the entries pertaining to my Finland travels. They are listed chronologically and can be found by clicking on the subheadings in the "Blog" section or in the boxes below each posting. All of the entries were written in the moment, and then rewritten at a later time with further reflection.
Why Finland?
In February, 2014, I submitted a proposal to my school's administration on how I would utilize my time if I was awarded the "Riepe Family Sabbatical"; an award given once a year to one faculty member at my school. My plans included details for traveling and furthering my research in critical visual culture studies, and dedicate some much needed time as a practicing artist. My proposal was accepted and this blog was my attempt to keep a record of my experiences.
Before I begin, I need to express my sincere gratitude to the Riepe Family, Gilman’s Administration, and the Gilman community as a whole. Additionally, a considerable portion of the travel component of my sabbatical includes a collegiate relationship with Dr. Kevin Tavin, Head of Art and Professor of International Art Education at Aalto University in Finland. Kevin and I co-authored a manuscript that involved research and teaching in critical pedagogy as it pertains to art education.* Kevin and his wife Dr. Mira Kallio-Tavin - Senior University Lecturer of International Art Education Curriculum at Aalto University- were vital in helping to make my travels productive. I am incredibly grateful for everyone's support.
*The manuscript, Teaching (Popular) Visual Culture: Deconstructing Disney in the Elementary Art Classroom, evolved out of my research for my Master's Thesis in Art Education. It continues to be an interest today, and has provided many opportunities for me to speak on the topic at schools and conferences. Initially published in Art Education, May,2003.
Any questions or comments are welcome.
